Fresta Valley came back today with their hustle and intensity against a talented, Wakefield (The Plains) team that limited the Pioneers offense to one shot on goal. "Our defense kept us in the game, that Wakefield team was one of the best teams we have played this season." Coach Fries remarked. Wakefield certainly had one of the best players FVC has seen this season. The Wakefield School continued to pressure our midfielder's and defense, keeping the ball in their offensive for most of the game. Theresa Stanley did her job, as always, against a very fast offense, helping the Fresta Valley Defense limit the Owl's to just eight shots on goal. The key to the close game was (Sweeper) Brooke Worsham and (Stopper, for the first time this season) Savannah Holmes. "I moved Savannah into a position she had never played, and it looked like she had been playing it all season."  Brooke W. and Savannah played so well together in the center defense position. Their communication and awareness of being in the right place at the right time limited Wakefield's assault on the 18 yard box. Another duo played well together, the Lam sisters. Their names typically do not go together because they have different roles on the team, but today they played together in the center of the field, and did it so cwell. "Both Lexi and Maddie played great, being their first time together in the center of the field. We just could not connect on our passes." Coach Fries commented. " The entire team played well today. We were missing a key starter, and our players coming off the bench did a tremendous job, making it seem that we were not missing Hannah Mortvedt." Hannah Towery and Marissa Pfannkuch played excellent throughout the game, making good touches on the ball, as well as hustling on both offense and defense. Another player deserving a note is 5th grade starter, Brooke Patten. Her hustle and intensity on the field epitomizes this teams identity. " She is a machine out there. I try and run her to death (Coach Fries smiling and joking), but she is alive and ready to play some more."  The Pioneers look for revenge on Thursday as they face Rappahannock for a second time at 4:15pm.
